National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health

CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed an 8.5 X 11 printable poster for correctional and detention facilities on recommended disinfection practices, available in English and Spanish.

The purpose of this poster is to provide plain language guidance to incarcerated workers to prevent the spread of viral infections through safe and proper use of disinfectants. We envision it being posted in dormitories and shared spaces. It is based on a NIOSH Workplace Solutions document that recommends steps to reduce viral surface contamination.

NIOSH created this poster in consultation with several facilities, after COVID-19 and mpox field deployments where facilities requested educational and training materials on this topic for staff and/or incarcerated workers. It is based on NIOSH’s guidelines on Safe and Proper Use of Disinfectants in Correctional Facilities.

If you’d like to provide feedback on how your facility uses the poster or on ways it could be improved to meet your facility’s needs, please contact LT Sarah Hughes at shughes2@cdc.gov.
