The Certified Jail Officer certification is for
front-line officers. Candidates are tested on
their general knowledge of:
Jail Operations
Safety & Security
Professional & Legal Concepts
Special Populations
Support Services
Certification provides documented evidence to the public that the individual was examined by an independent professional organization in the competency of general and management skills regarding operational practices in the field of local corrections. It not only elevates professional standards of jail operations by indicating that the individual has the proper job experience and body of knowledge, but also encourages continuing education, professional growth, and a commitment to continue working in the local corrections profession. All AJA certifications are effective for four years.

Although general knowledge of the experienced jail officer
and familiarity with current practices are what is required
to pass the examination, the resource list will be of some
assistance in preparing for the examination. The list of resources is neither all-inclusive nor exhaustive.
