Northeast Regional Correctional Training Center
 

The Northeast Regional Correctional Training Center (NERCTC) is a collaborative effort between the American Jail Association (AJA) and the New York City Department of Correction (NYCDOC)

NERCTC provides training to correctional agency staff employed in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
 

MISSION 
The Northeast Regional Correctional Training Center (NERCTC) promotes operational excellence within local jails across the region. The NERCTC will be a nationally recognized model for jail-specific training certification that supports professional development, ensures regulatory compliance, and reinforces public trust in correctional services.
 

Managing and Resolving Conflict

Course Overview:  
  • Define and appreciate the various management styles including the pros and cons when using those styles when addressing a conflict.
  • Identify your own preferred conflict management style including both the limitations and advantages of using that style.   
  • Demonstrate the use of active listening as a proactive means to both address conflict and prevent the destructive results of unmanaged conflict.
  • Explain and demonstrate the use of effective feedback and constructive criticism skills to effectively resolve workplace conflicts. 
  • Demonstrate how resolving and managing conflict has a positive effect within our respective teams, the jail culture and increasing safety, security and overall performance within our jails.

Instructor Information: 

Michael J. Dooley, M.Ed., oversees the training program for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections including Basic Training, in-service training and specialized training for over 15,000 employees.  He also serves on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Correctional Training Personnel.  Mike has over 35 years of correctional experience having worked in prisons and jails, probation, parole, human resources and training, and community/restorative justice programs. Mike worked for 14 years at the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) as a Correctional Program Manager.   While at the NIC, Mike’s focus was in a variety of areas including mental health, restorative justice, leadership and management development, training capacity building, public and media relations, team development and distance learning. Mr. Dooley obtained his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Vermont in 1992.  He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. 



A minimum number of participants are needed to hold our workshops.  You may cancel up to five business days prior to the Professional Development WorkshopNo refunds will be given for cancellations received five or less business days before the class.  All cancellations are subject to a $50 service fee.  Your cancellation must be received in writing via fax or e-mail.  Substitutions are acceptable.  "No Shows" will be charged at the applicable rate. It is strongly recommended that participants DO NOT purchase airline tickets without first contacting AJA to confirm program availability.  Workshops begin at 8:00 AM and usually go until 5:00 PM (unless otherwise noted).
