Professional Development
AJA’s Professional Development Workshops, Virtual Trainings, Summits and Conference focus exclusively on issues specific to the operations of local correctional facilities. These single or multi-day intensive trainings provide beneficial and useful information to bring back for use in your facility. Many times the greatest learning experiences come from the networking. Classes include practitioners from all around the country. Many attendees keep in touch with those friends and colleagues they met through AJA training!
Join the thousands of correctional professionals who have turned to AJA for training, while advancing their careers, and strengthening their agencies.
The American Jail Association can provide your staff with cost-effective, custom-designed training and technical assistance in the comfort and convenience of your own facility. For information, contact Training Coordinator Lori Bachtell at 301-857-2620 or lorib@aja.org

Use of Force and Critical Incident Review Training
Training Instructor: Lonnie Lemons
Dates: March 18 - 19, 2026
Time: 8am to 5pm
Location: Cape Fear Community College North Campus
Course Description:
In today’s environment—where every law enforcement and correctional use of force incident is
subject to intense public and media scrutiny—it is critical that agencies conduct thorough and
well-documented reviews of all Use of Force and Critical Incidents for both operational and
liability purposes. A proper review is essential to protect your agency, your staff, and your
community, and it serves as a key component in reducing liability, improving training, and
identifying trends and early warning signs. The media often releases videos and partial
information aimed at capturing public attention, which can escalate negative perceptions and
place increased pressure on agencies. This training is designed to prepare your staff to
confidently and competently conduct reviews of Use of Force and Critical Incidents, helping
your agency respond appropriately to internal and external scrutiny.
Key Learning Objectives:
• What is a Use of Force and Critical Incident Review and how it benefits agencies and staff
• Legal and policy definitions: What constitutes a use of force
• Myths vs. facts in use of force reviews
• Identifying and reporting improper use of force
• How to document the review process thoroughly and accurately
• Identifying early warning signs and trends
• Developing and using a comprehensive review checklist
* April 20 - 22, 2026
