Detention Service Technician - Cadet

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS

Under the direct supervision of the Division Commander or designee, performs a variety of limited administrative and informational tasks. This is a paraprofessional, civilian position designed to relieve detention personnel from certain designated functions. Employees of this class may be assigned to work in a variety of organizational components such as Booking, Visitation, Commissary, Control Room and Classification. The DST functions as a specially trained civilian performing services that assist the need in multiple areas of the facility. Work is reviewed through conferences, activity reports, written reports, inspections, and observations of results obtained. Performs duties as assigned.

IMPORTANT: The Detention Service Technician - Cadet position is a transitional position. This employee must desire and be eligible for a transition to become a certified Detention Deputy with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Works an assigned shift at a designated location of the detention center.
  2. Assists various units with information processing, handling of personal property, processing intakes and commissary orders, and clerical activities
  3. Answers telephone to give assistance and/or routing to the proper unit.
  4. Operates metal detector for concealed weapons or contraband in housing during regulated, non-inmate contact activities.
  5. Performs various other correctional duties in a non-sworn nature as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

    Training and Experience

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Possession of a valid State of Florida driver’s license.


    Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

  1. The ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action.
  2. The ability to obtain information through interviews and observations.
  3. The ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
  4. The ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
  5. The ability to follow and understand oral and written instructions, and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  6. The ability to operate radio equipment, and the ability to use 10 Codes and adhere to the rules of radio communication.
  7. The ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.
  8. The knowledge of pertinent laws, rules and procedures pertaining to related operations and violations.
  9. The knowledge of the detention center and its demographics.
  10. Some knowledge of the Sheriff’s Office Policies and Procedures.


    Essential Physical Skills

  1. Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction)
  2. Acceptable hearing (with or without correction)
  3. Ability to communicate clearly
  4. Able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
  5. Ability to lift/carry a minimum of 50 pounds
