Correctional Captain

The Orange County Corrections Department (OCCD) operates the 4th  largest jail system in the State of Florida with more than 1,500 employees. It serves and protects the citizens of Orange County by providing for the care, custody, and control of legally incarcerated inmates in a safe and secure environment, and provides services for those individuals supervised in community programs.

Orange County Corrections is seeking highly qualified individuals to fill Correctional Captain positions. Correctional Captains are responsible for directing the operations of the correctional facility. This position assumes command of and exercises leadership over assigned Correctional personnel.

Representative Duties
  • Manages divisions or work units in absence of the Major.
  • Directs and oversees activities of certified and civilian staff in assigned area of responsibility. Performs supervisory duties such as instructing, assigning, reviewing and planning work of others. Allocates personnel, acts on employee problems, selects new employees, and recommends disciplinary actions, discharges, transfers, promotions, and salary increases.
  • Assists in formulating goals and objectives for long and short term planning.
  • Conducts research, prepares statistical, budget and internal reports and utilizes data from these reports for planning and submittals to the Chief of Corrections.
  • Serves as a liaison with local, State, and Federal law enforcement and correctional agencies, community groups, and represents department at court proceedings.
  • Assists with developing policies and procedures for the department. Interprets policies, procedures, rules and regulations and ensures that staff members follow the same.
  • Prepares correspondence to respond to requests from citizens and law enforcement agencies regarding the Department’s Internal Affairs policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that operations, safety, and security is adhered to in secure facilities, while conforming to Federal, State and local jail standards and laws.
  • Coordinates and supervises all activities of inmates. Handles inmate requests for interviews and counsels inmates regarding problems associated with their confinement.
  • May oversee construction projects, ensuring contractor compliance with security standards and coordinates repairs of facilities with the Facilities Management Department. May be responsible for development and coordination of the Division capital improvement projects and budget.
  • May direct and oversee activities of staff assigned to training, new facility transition teams and systems analysis.
  • May be on-call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to respond to emergencies in the facility.
  • May provide operational advice and recommendations to ensure that the food service facility operates in compliance with Federal, State, and local mandates. Monitors quality of meals to ensure compliance with Federal, State and local mandates.
  • Attends regular or special management meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have completed ninety (90) credit hours towards a Bachelor’s degree and working towards completion of the Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Eight (8) years of experience in a certified corrections position providing oversight of detained inmates under confinement, to include providing care, custody, and general welfare within a detention type environment.
  • Six (6) of the eight (8) years of experience must have been in a supervisory capacity and two (2) of the six (6) years as a Correctional Lieutenant, equivalent or higher rank.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class “E” Driver’s License.
  • Meet requirements and standards of the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission as authorized by F.S.S. 943.13.
  • Must possess and maintain State of Florida Correctional Officer certification within first year of employment.
  • Must be able to work all shifts, weekends and holidays and be on-call 24/7.
