Director of Corrections


Executive level position, which reports to the Deputy County Administrative Officer for Public Safety. Responsible for providing strong leadership and direction for the Department of Corrections. Incumbent  plans, coordinates, provides leadership and guidance in critical areas of the department of corrections including but not limited to operations, administration, budgeting, resource development and allocation, policy formation, key performance indicators, development, implementation, and administration of innovative solutions.

This position requires a significant amount of interaction with other County Departments/agencies, criminal justice system partners and advisory boards.

The Department is responsible for supervising adult offenders through progressive and effective sound corrections, rehabilitation, and recidivism reduction employment and reentry while maintaining safety and security. The Corrections Department forges partnerships to bridge the gap between offenders and the community by encouraging client responsibility and behavioral change.

Examples of Duties
  • Serves as the principal Officer of the Corrections Department and sets the strategic direction for the Department; Manages the execution of initiatives ensuring alignment with County strategic goals
  • Represents the County on all Corrections related issues to outside governmental units and the criminal justice system at the local, state, regional, and national levels; monitors the state and federal legislative process for significant changes;
  • Leads the implementation of positive, evidence-based changes in laws, programs, and practices within the Department and County; testifies before the state legislature and speaks with legislators to lobby for appropriate changes;
  • Works with the Office of Law and other key stakeholders to initiate and implement new initiatives to improve offender successful reentry in the County;
  • Maintains oversight of the operations of the overall Department and continually monitors performance within each division;
  • Works closely with the Office of Human Resources for HR related matters;
  • Develops and manages the departmental budget and expenditures and ensures the timely application for community program funds;
  • Builds and maintains relationships with other County departments and community partners; leads the Corrections Department in the County’s initiative to become a higher performing organization.
  • Leads the Department’s strategic planning initiatives.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice or a related field.  
A Master’s degree in Corrections, Public or Business Administration, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice or a related field is preferred.  

  • Professional Certification in related field preferred but not required.
  • Ten years of progressively more responsible Criminal Justice management experience, preferably in Corrections and the public sector, is required. 
  • Seven years of experience in a top administrative role in Corrections related programs is required. 
  • Two years of experience leading a large jail network is required.
