The American Jail Association offers a practical two-day workshop designed to help correctional professionals develop and implement effective Objective Jail Classification (OJC) systems. This course focuses on building sustainable practices that improve inmate management, align with recent legal findings, and reduce operational risks.

Using practical case studies and current legal insights, participants will review the foundational principles of OJC and explore key applications such as creating housing plans for various inmate populations, conducting risk and needs assessments, managing disciplinary actions, addressing gang affiliations and protective custody considerations, and planning for re-entry and inmate programming. The course also emphasizes the importance of data collection and analysis to support informed decision-making for housing and classification processes.

Participants will engage in hands-on activities to classify inmates, assign housing, update classifications as needed, and design re-entry plans. A self-assessment component will guide attendees in evaluating their agency’s practices and identifying areas for improvement. The workshop also addresses how to engage stakeholders to secure resources and support for classification and management initiatives.

This workshop, hosted by the American Jail Association, provides correctional professionals with practical tools and strategies to enhance jail operations while maintaining a focus on safety, efficiency, and accountability.
