“If we keep doing what we’re doing, we’re going to keep getting what we’re getting.”—Stephen Covey
Improvement of the jail workplace and retention of jail employees are ongoing critical issues for jail and local government leaders. Progress, reform, and daily operations rely on keeping quality employees. Yet, the question needs to be asked: Are jail leaders soliciting input, listening, and acting to address concerns raised by their employees? Merriam-Webster defines listening as “to hear something with thoughtful attention…” Seems basic, right? But listening is often a low priority in our workplaces. Our next jail leaders who attended the National Jail Leadership Command Academy have a great perspective that all jail leaders need to hear. It is personal; it’s about your leadership.

Objectives:
1. Explain why it is important to listen—even when leaders may not agree.
2. Discuss the weaknesses of leaders as identified by mid-managers.
3. Review the strengths of leaders as identified by mid-managers.
4. Explain what you can do to assure you are soliciting input, listening and acting.
5. Identify resources.
