Training Performance Objectives
- Define and appreciate the various management styles including the pros and cons when using those styles when addressing a conflict.
- Identify your own preferred conflict management style including both the limitations and advantages of using that style.
- Demonstrate the use of active listening as a proactive means to both address conflict and prevent the destructive results of unmanaged conflict.
- Explain and demonstrate the use of effective feedback and constructive criticism skills to effective resolve workplace conflicts.
- Demonstrate how resolving and managing conflict has a positive effect within our respective teams, the jail culture and increasing safety, security and overall performance within our jails.

Sam Davis MS, CJM, Major Jail Administrator (Retired) Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, Adjunct Staff, School of Criminal Justice Michigan State University East Lansing, Michigan
Major Sam L. Davis retired as the Jail Administrator from the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO), Mason, Michigan. Sam is a graduate of the Mid-Michigan Corrections Academy and the 83rd Michigan Police Academy. He served as Chair of the Jail Administrators for the Michigan Sheriffs Association until his retirement and was appointed to the Governor’s Task Force on Racial Equity. Prior to joining the ICSO, Sam spent 33 years as a Teacher, Coach, Principal, and Central Administrator for the Lansing School District. He was an Adjunct Professor in Criminal Justice at MSU and works part-time for the Michigan High School Athletic Association. He teaches Diversity, Leadership, Ethics, Objective Jail Classification, and other topics nationally. Sam is a lifetime member of AJA. As a board member of the AJA, Sam serves as Secretary and also chairs the Training and Professional Development Committee and the Leadership Track on the Conference Planning Committee. Sam enjoys playing golf and is a martial arts enthusiast.

All hotels are in the same area, off I71 and Rt. 18. They are an 18 minute drive to the campus.
A minimum number of participants are needed to hold our workshops. You may cancel up to five business days prior to the Professional Development Workshop. No refunds will be given for cancellations received five or less business days before the class. All cancellations are subject to a $50 service fee. Your cancellation must be received in writing via fax or e-mail. Substitutions are acceptable. "No Shows" will be charged at the applicable rate. It is strongly recommended that participants DO NOT purchase airline tickets without first contacting AJA to confirm program availability. Workshops begin at 8:00 AM and usually go until 5:00 PM (unless otherwise noted).
