    The plan is a 24-hour training involving practicums, hands-on opportunities, and takeaways that can be immediately used in their personal leadership development and applied to their agencies.
 
At the end of this course, participants will: 
  • Participants will learn the qualities and skills needed to become more effective leaders and ways to build others' trust in their leadership.
  • Participants will learn how to tailor communication to fit the circumstances, from running a meeting to managing difficult conversations. 
  • Participants will learn how to develop personal mission statements focusing on short-term and long-term goals to keep them headed in the right direction.
  • Participants will explore project management and presentation skills essential for effective leaders. 
  • Participants will learn the importance of risk assessment and succession planning to their agency's future.
 
Instructors:

 Denise Diamond
   Captain Diamond, BA, CJM has worked for over 23 years at the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, the largest county jail system in Oregon. She has held numerous positions including MCSO Corrections Compliance Manager, PREA Coordinator, Use of Force Inspector, Training Unit Captain and Shift Lieutenant of both MCSO jail facilities. Denise has attained all six certifications through the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training including Management and Executive, and has a Bachelor's Degree in English from Portland State University. She is a Jail Inspector through the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association, and a graduate of OSSA’s Command College Advanced Leadership Course. Denise is an active AJA member, currently serving on the AJA Board of Directors, Chairing the Strategic Planning Committee, teaching at AJA Annual Conferences and participating in AJA Conference Planning. She is an AJA Certified Jail Manager (CJM). Denise also provides training, consulting, and conducts PREA audits, when requested. She is a certified DOJ PREA Auditor.

 Sam Davis MS, CJM, Major Jail Administrator (Retired) Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, Adjunct Staff, School of Criminal Justice Michigan State University East Lansing, Michigan
Major Sam L. Davis retired as the Jail Administrator from the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO), Mason, Michigan. Sam is a graduate of the Mid-Michigan Corrections Academy and the 83rd Michigan Police Academy. He served as Chair of the Jail Administrators for the Michigan Sheriffs Association until his retirement and was appointed to the Governor’s Task Force on Racial Equity. Prior to joining the ICSO, Sam spent 33 years as a Teacher, Coach, Principal, and Central Administrator for the Lansing School District. He was an Adjunct Professor in Criminal Justice at MSU and works part-time for the Michigan High School Athletic Association. He teaches Diversity, Leadership, Ethics, Objective Jail Classification, and other topics nationally. Sam is a lifetime member of AJA. As a board member of the AJA, Sam serves as Secretary and also chairs the Training and Professional Development Committee and the Leadership Track on the Conference Planning Committee. Sam enjoys playing golf and is a martial arts enthusiast.
 

A minimum number of participants are needed to hold our workshop.  You may cancel up to five business days prior to the Professional Development workshop .  No refunds will be given for cancellations received five or less business days before the class.  All cancellations are subject to a $50 service fee.  Your cancellation must be received in writing via fax or e-mail.  Substitutions are acceptable.  "No Shows" will be charged at the applicable rate. It is strongly recommended that participants DO NOT purchase airline tickets without first contacting AJA to confirm program availability.  Workshops begin at 8:00 AM and usually go until 5:00 PM (unless otherwise noted).
