Jail Death Investigation: Lessons Learned & Preparation for the Future
Instructors: Linda Bryant

A solid jail death review approaches the critical incident – a jail death - from several lenses.  The presenters today will show you how they review the jail death from their particular lens.  A solid jail death review should reveal the things that were done right, the things that were done wrong, and the things that could be done better. A poorly handled jail death review or a poorly organized jail death review, can cloud the truth and instead lead to confusion. Because of the importance of what jail officers do, and the constitutional principles involved, those involved in jail death reviews should prepare reviews expecting various stakeholders involved (jail agencies, jail oversight organizations, citizen groups, local and state police, district attorneys, civil rights groups, plaintiff’s attorneys, Department of Justice, the media, elected officials), to at some point review your report.  On top of that, we should all expect state courts and federal courts to be reviewing your reports.  Performing jail death reviews is an awesome responsibility.  You will leave the course feeling daunted by the task but armed with the network, the knowledge and the resources to know you are up to the task and inspired by the service you provide when you are committed to finding the truth.
